BLACK FELDSPAR GEMSTONE
Black Feldspar is is a dark gray or black gemstone best known for its moody schiller effect, displaying blue and violet hues all the way through greens, yellows, and oranges.
Dark and mysterious, Black Feldspar is a gemstone that has been used in the production of jewelry since the 18th century. While gem-quality Black Feldspar is reserved for the manufacture of jewelry, this mineral has also found use in the creation of glass and as a road construction material.
Ranging in color from dark gray to black, Black Feldspar ranges from 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. The moody and spectral play of color found within the stone is the result of many tiny inclusions that produce a schiller effect. As light plays across the surface of this stone, a variety of colors can be witnessed, ranging from blue and violet to green, yellow, and orange! To maximize this iridescence, Black Feldspar is primarily cut in a cabochon. Occasionally, the stone is also fashioned into beads.
Black Feldspar can be a sophisticated gem to work. In its natural state, the rough has many fractures and cracks present, which severely reduce the yield. After mining, the desirable black and gray sections of the rough need to be separated from the brown portion. Next, matching the usable stones is a painstaking and time-consuming process. This is due to the importance of sorting stones with similar properties of fire so that the finished product is uniform in quality. Finally, the setting of the stone is critical. Stones need to be set in a way that maximizes their play of fire across the surface of the stone.
• Black Feldspar is thought to be a lucky stone and promote lucid dreaming.
• Some believe that this gem will also dispel negative energies, such as depression and anxiety.
• Black Feldspar has also been credited with being a stone of peace, calming an overactive mind.
